The flat ground in the middle distance is the saddle between Cwm Hirddu Fawr on the right, and Cwm Cerddin on the left. The fence marks the former boundary between the historic Welsh counties of Merionethshire and Montgomeryshire, which essentially ceased to exist when they merged into the newly created Gwynedd and Powys counties respectively under the 1972 Local Government Act.
