Narrowboat under Brooms Bridge near Hindford, Shropshire
This is the narrowboat "Journeyman" negotiating (at a very awkward and clunky angle!) the bridge hole at Brooms Bridge, No 7W across the Llangollen Canal.
This is an accommodation bridge with no public access into adjacent fields.
Bridges on the Llangollen Canal
Navigating west along the Llangollen Canal, bridges are numbered from No 1 near Hurleston Junction through to No 70 at Frankton Junction. Then numbering restarts at No 1 from Frankton Junction, while the sequence from No 71 onwards continues south along the Montgomery Canal.
In recent years, those west of Frankton have been given a W suffix to their number, so Rowson's Bridge No 1W is the same bridge as No 70!
Accommodation Bridges
When the canals (or railways) were built in the 18th and 19th centuries, they were often routed in such a way that farmers and other landowners had their land bisected, so bridges had to be provided to allow access to fields on both sides of the canal. These bridges are frequently referred to as accommodation bridges, and however solid and well constructed, often don't lead anywhere except from one field to another.
