The Grade II* Listed Dukes Head Hotel stands on what was the Gryffen Inn until 1683 when it was demolished and replaced with the current building, dubiously attributed to the architect Henry Bell for Lynn MP Sir John Turner. Completed in 1689 named after the then Duke of York, all that remains today of the Gryffen Inn is the main staircase at the front of the hotel. By 2009 the hotel was in disrepair and administration. Surya Hotels took on the hotel and it reopened in September 2011 after a £2.2m revamp still leaving 20 rooms needing a £0.5m restoration. The bank Massey & Co used to operate in the building up until the 1930s and in late 2016 a new bar was opened with this name following extensive renovation work. Famous guests include Sir Robert Walpole and Princess Victoria, who stayed in 1835. Directory entries (under Lynn or Lynn Regis) for Dukes Head include; 1839 John Johnson (& posting house); 1854 Robert Henry Bollin; 1856-1890 Samuel Nichols Marshall (& posting house, omnibus to meet every train, in 1869-1890 also Globe Inn King St.); 1892 Alfred Moses Everard Tuddenham, manager; 1896 Frank T Watts (late of The Wellington, Strand, London); 1901 Sydney Airen (newly furnished and decorated with every luxury, good stock rooms. Hotel 'bus and cabs meet all trains.); 1904-1912 John Augustus Johnson (Freemasons Lodge 107 listed here).
