Torhouse Stone Circle
Torhouse Stone Circle
This is a very unusual stone circle for this part of Scotland, and is one of the best preserved of its type in Britain. It was built in the Bronze Age some four thousand years ago for a religious ceremonial purpose that is now lost to us. Most stone circles of this type seem to have been aligned with the rising or setting moon or sun. This example may have been laid out in a design related to the midwinter sunrise. The nineteen dumpy granite boulders are graded in height, with the larger stones in the south-eastern sector. In the centre of the circle is a ring cairn and a setting of three large stones, two upright and the central one recumbent. Circles of this type are known as recumbent stone circles. They are most common in north-east Scotland.
