Hoverlloyd Hovercraft at Pegwell Bay
The Hoverlloyd 'The Prince of Wales' hovercraft at the hoverport at Pegwell Bay near Ramsgate. 'The Prince of Wales' was one of four craft operated by Hoverlloyd, the others being named 'Sure', 'Sir Christopher' and 'Swift'. The Hoverport at Pegwell Bay was built in 1969 and provided a cross-channel service to Calais until the end of the 1982 season when it ceased. The rising cost of aviation kerosene in the late 1970s made the hovercraft increasingly uneconomic, also the closure of the British Hovercraft Corporation meant that maintenance became expensive.
The hovercraft is no more, the same can be said of the Richborough Power Station which can be seen in the background. Construction began in 1958, it began generating electricity in 1963, was converted to oil in 1971, and ceased generating power in 1996. It was demolished in 2012.
