Big Water of Fleet Viaduct
Big Water of Fleet Viaduct
Opened in 1861, the 300 yard viaduct carried the former Portpatrick & Wigtownshire Joint Railway across the Big Water of Fleet. It is in remote countryside within the Cairnsmore of Fleet National Nature Reserve. The line closed on 14 June 1965, and a report in 1976 said that it was likely to be demolished shortly! Formerly B listed, it was de-listed, so technically there is nothing to prevent its demolition which would be great shame.
