Holmstone - a unique natural landscape
Holmstone - a unique natural landscape
The dark, wind-shaped shrubs in this picture are hollies, locally known as 'holly tops', growing on the shingle of Lydd Ranges. Many of the hollies are thought to be very old and the bushes shelter a variety of other plants and many animals. Their origin is a bit of a mystery: why, for example, are they spaced apart as they are and do not form continuous holly cover? Why does so little else grow on the shingle?
