Tympanum, Linton Kirk
Tympanum, Linton Kirk
This tympanum was originally carved from a single piece of sandstone, and was originally over the south door, later built into the new door in 1857. The stone shows a bearded figure with a bird on his right shoulder and lance in his right hand. The lance is thrust into the mouth of one of two beasts. It is believed to depict John Somerville of Linton, allegedly knighted in 1174 after killing a dragon known as the 'Linton Worm'.

Information sourced from a hand-held display board within the kirk.
Following The Trail Of The 'Linton Worm'
The 'Linton Worm' is a mythical beast believed to have lived in this corner of Roxburghshire in the Scottish Borders in the 12th century. The word 'worm' derives from 'wyrm' (serpent).

The beast was reported to be longer than three yards, and in girth, larger than a man's leg.
