Young Moor-Hens in Waters' Edge Park
Young Moor-Hens in Waters' Edge Park
The Moor-Hen (Latin Name:Gallinula chloropus) is a common sight in Waters' Edge Park. For more information see Wikipedia LinkExternal link

The larger bird in the photo is not the parent but a first brood Moor-Hen (note the dark bill). Moor-Hens have two broods each year and the young from the first brood stay to help raise the second. This increases the chance of survival of the young in the second brood. In terms of natural selection/genetically raising a sibling is equivalent to raising your own offspring as you are 50% related to both. It may also help the first brood birds learn how to raise chicks.
