Abandoned millstone in Padley Gorge
Abandoned millstone in Padley Gorge
How old it is and why it was left here - nobody knows. Hand-carved from the base rock of millstone grit, it would have taken many hours to shape. Millstones from this area were used all over the country and beyond in corn mills and metal industries. Production began to peter out towards the end of the nineteenth century.
