SE19 Pleistocene: Megaloceros
SE19 Pleistocene: Megaloceros
This is the Pleistocene fossil genus often known as the Irish (or Great) Elk. Since reasonably complete fossil skeletons were available in the 1850s, the Megaloceros figures are reckoned to be the most accurate of Owen's and Hawkins' reconstructions.

I am absolutely no expert, but even to me it is clear that Megaloceros is only remotely related to the present day Eurasian Elk (Alces alces) - the species known in North America as the moose. The moose has a rather droopy snout, and its overall build is more horse-like. It turns out that Megaloceros is reckoned to be closely related to the genus Dama, the fallow deer.

Anyway, the antlers of the SE19 elk are truly massive. In life they must have been appallingly heavy, requiring exceptional development of the neck musculature in a stag. I notice that two of the forward-pointing tines are broken - is this simulated 'battle damage', or just vandalism?
