The stone obelisk marks the grave of 'Sir Briggs' - the horse that carried Godfrey Morgan (the first Lord Tredegar), of the 17th Lancers, in the Charge of the Light Brigade.
Tredegar House Under new management
In March 2012, the management of this 17th century mansion which is owned by Newport City Council was transferred to the National Trust on a 50 year lease.
Ownership of the house was in the hands of the Morgan family up until the mid 20th century, the last being Evan, Viscount Tredegar and then his cousin, John, 6th and last Baron. Ownership by the National Trust was considered in the 1940s but never came to pass.
In 1951 it became a Catholic boarding school and later St. Joseph's Roman Catholic comprehensive school.
Newport Council became its owners in 1974.
