Many dozens of old headstones have been arranged along the northern and southern boundaries of the abbey churchyard. In a matter of a couple of minutes (in the rain!) I found a number of interesting old stones - I'd recommend a more leisurely search to anyone interested in such things.

Perhaps the most interesting thing about this stone is that the (customary) hour-glass (top left) is balanced (top right) by a serpent with its tail in its mouth - plainly a symbol of immortality, but not one that belongs to the Christian tradition.
