Grade II Listed building probably pre-dating the claimed establishment date. Licensing records show that the Cross's licence was issued in 1652. This is not to be confused with Rodger's Cross that previously existed at 47 Thoroughfare. The pub was left in a will in 1652 and described as '....The Red Cross Inn to provide clothing for poor women and children living in the parish'. In 1769 John Rolfe is recorded as '....removed from the Salutation in Ipswich to the Sign of the Cross..' but from 1773 references refer to it as the Cross or Cross Inn. The Cross appeared to be undergoing transformation in late 2009 and by 2011 was declaring itself as a vegetarian restaurant and bar. In 2016 it was the East Coast Diner, that has gradually appeared to move up market to a wine bar with gourmet burgers and pizza..
