Water shaft
Water shaft
The 1:25000 map has "Shaft (water)" at this point, and it shows water issuing from that point; it is flowing to the right from the base of this building, but it cannot be seen from this angle. NS2874 : Water shaft, a view from that side, shows the water clearly. It flows under the path and re-emerges on the other side: NS2874 : Burn flowing from a water shaft.

In the background of the present picture, on the right, is Whinhill Reservoir.

Two structures related to the water shaft are nearby, and they are marked on the 1:25000 map. One of them is a NS2874 : Covered reservoir (or water tank), which can be seen in the present picture, directly in front of Whinhill Reservoir (and much closer than it).

The other is a NS2874 : Water pumping station, which is out of shot to the right. For a wide-angle view showing all three structures in context, see NS2874 : Water infrastructure at Maukinhill.

For the identity of the buildings behind the distant Whinhill Reservoir, see NS2774 : Whinhill Reservoir: sluice.
