Axe and Compass, Church Lane, Hemingford Abbots
Grade II Listed 17th century inn. When the area was all woodland, the pub was called the Foresters' Arms, later becoming the Carpenters' Arms and now combines tools from both trades. The pub describes itself as 15th century. Directory entries include; 1839 W Wright, Carpenters' Arms; 1854 William Hull, Carpenters' Arms; 1862 6 beer retailers listed but no pub names except the Royal Oak Inn; 1864 T Sneesby, Carpenters' Arms; 1876 Elizabeth Sneesby, Axe & Compass; 1885 Mrs Elizabeth Sneesby, Carpenters' Arms; 1898 not listed but 2 beer retailers and 3 other pubs listed; 1903-1910 John Akins/Akens, Axe & Compass; 1914 George Grimes, Axe & Compass. Some confusion seems to exist over the name in 1876-1885 and it seems possible it was just a beerhouse until the 20th century.
