This plant is a member of the Chenopodium family and in Britain consists of 8 or 9 species, all of which are considered food plants in some cultures and is being cultivated for that purpose. It thrives on disturbed, nutrient-rich soils and can frequently be found growing in the vicinity of manure heaps.
