Red Bartsia (Odontites vernus)
Red Bartsia (Odontites vernus)
This common and widespread plant > LinkExternal link can also be found in northern and southern Europe but not on some of the Mediterranean islands, where it grows on disturbed land, on field margins and roadside verges. It is semi-parasitic in that it fastens onto the roots of the plants growing in its vicinity to taking water and minerals from them. As its botanical name suggests, Red Bartsia was once used for treating tooth aches; odon is the Greek word for tooth.
