Smallhythe Place
Smallhythe Place
A half-timbered house of a type known as a continuous jetty house since the upper storey overhangs the lower along the entire length of the building. It dates from the 16th century and was probably built soon after 1514 when a fire destroyed much of Smallhythe. At that time, the river Rother flowed round the north side of the Isle of Oxney and was navigable as far inland as Smallhythe, where there was a shipyard involved in shipbuilding, ship repair and ship breaking, and Smallhythe Place is thought to have been the harbour-masterís house. However, after the main flow of the Rother returned to the south of the Isle of Oxney in the 17th century and the river channel silted up, this trade was lost and the house became a farmhouse. In 1899 it was bought by the actress Ellen Terry, who lived there until her death in 1928, following which the house became a museum dedicated to her. Since 1947 it has been in the care of the National Trust, and is designated by Historic England as a Grade II* listed building.
