St Mary, Conistone - nave
St Mary, Conistone - nave
The church is simple in form, with a north but not a south side aisle, and a slightly lower chancel. Compare my last visit 17 years earlier SD9867 : Interior of St Mary's church - the render has been removed from the arcade wall to reveal the original stonework. Although little else seems to have changed, in fact there was an exhibition in the church showing how the floor was completely renewed with underfloor heating in 2011, involving removing and reinstating the pews. But it has been done so well that you would not know.
St Mary's church, Conistone
The church was originally built in the 11th-12th centuries, i.e. Norman times, but was largely rebuilt in 1846 while retaining some features from as early as the 14th century. It is situated at the northern end of the small village of Conistone in Wharfedale.

Its parish was taken out of the ancient parish of Burnsall; while originally in the Diocese of Ripon, it passed to the new Diocese of Bradford in 1919, and to the combined Diocese of Leeds in 2014. It now forms part of a combined parish with Kettlewell, and the benefice of Kettlewell with Conistone, Hubberholme and Arncliffe covering Upper Wharfedale and Littondale.
