There was a parochial chapel here in 1320, or possibly earlier. Partly reconstructed C17, with a tower of 1691. It ceased to be used as a parish church in 1826 when St Cuthbert's was built nearer the town centre, then fell into serious disrepair (despite a restoration in 1906), but it was not formally "closed" until 1994. The Friends of Pateley Bridge Cemetery and St Mary’s Churchyard started in 2004 to preserve what remained of the ruins but Harrogate Council maintains the old churchyard. Although the main part of the church now lacks a roof, the tower and walls are still standing and are listed grade II (list entry 1173559) and an ancient monument.
