Mierystock Tunnel. Lydbrook, Forest of Dean
This is a view of the south portal; the north portal has been earthed over.
The 242 yds long Mierystock tunnel was on the Lydbrook branch of the Severn & Wye Railway and last saw a passenger train in 1929. Today the whole of the trackbed has been converted into a cycleway with a short detour to avoid the tunnel. This involves crossing the busy A4136 (between Coleford and Cinderford) so early in 2005 a group of local men obtained a JCB and attempted to reopen the tunnel; they were soon stopped by the council!
