The COPP memorial on South Hayling Esplanade
The COPP memorial on South Hayling Esplanade
It stands for Combined Operations Pilotage Parties.
It was a clandestine commando like outfit that secretly entered enemy territory to check out various beaches and the areas beyond, to scout for possible un-noticed future landing of spies or maybe even invasions in WW2.
The plaque reads "Dedicated to the volunteers of Combined Operations Pilotage Parties based on Hayling Island in WW2.
