Once enclosed area where barges (lighters) could load goods in and out of this once impressive mill.
Beeleigh Milling Complex

Beeleigh Mill is a fascinating and rare milling complex sited close to Maldon, Essex. The site comprises a ruined watermill complete with a rare tidal docking system (an early version of the loading bays you see in modern warehouses) and a very rare insitu steam plant. The watermill had between 10 and 12 stones powered by two breast shot wheels. The five storey mill was burnt down in 1875 and never rebuilt.

The steam mill, which contains a late 1830s Wentworth Compound steam engine, also boasts a very rare elephant boiler. The steam machinery ran five stones via a rather nice hurst frame. The steam mill was installed into the former granary around 1845.

The site is sporadically open for tours and is currently under restoration. LinkExternal link
