The K&ESR - unlike most preserved standard-gauge lines - perpetuates the identity of a company which existed long before the end of the steam era on British Railways. It survived as an independent entity right up until nationalisation in 1948 - though, as I understand it, it was always pretty marginal as a commercial enterprise, and for years stayed in business mainly through the efforts of a certain Colonel Stephens.

According to the K&ESR website, there was a time in the line's history when it ran more trains than it carried passengers. From the vantage point of Wittersham Road station, you begin to see why - there's hardly a human habitation in sight; the place is a country mile from the middle of nowhere. Whether the name 'Wittersham Road' was chosen cynically or out of misplaced hope, the old K&ESR wasn't the only company to name a station after a settlement it had failed to serve. The GWR (for instance) had its 'Wantage Road' (in Berkshire) and 'Gwinear Road' (in Cornwall). But the GWR was big enough to survive without the custom of small rural communities; the K&ESR had nothing else.

Until, that is, it was resurrected by enthusiasts. There's some irony in the fact that the line now carries far more passengers than it ever did in its earlier - 'real life' - incarnation.
