Bankfield Mill, Barnoldswick
This is a very large former weaving shed and it is only with some elevation that one can appreciate that a sizable portion of the roof has been removed. The typical north light profile is seen on the wall to the right. In the right background is the engine house. The shed was built in two stages and two engines. it is not clear to me if they shared the same house.

The shed closest was built in 1905 to house 1700 looms and the shed beyond its far wall was built in 1909 for a further 1200 looms, making it an exceptionally large shed. Indeed it is claimed to be the largest weaving shed built on a single floor level. The first phase was powered by a 800 horsepower horizontal cross compound steam engine by the Burnley Ironworks Company. The second phase had a 600 horsepower horizontal cross compound engine by the Burnley Ironworks. This works out roughly at the commonly claimed 0.5 horsepower per loom.

The mill closed in 1934 and after a couple of changes of hand was requisitioned by the Ministry of Aircraft Production in 1940. This led to Rolls Royce taking over development of Whittle's jet engine here and led to an association that continues to the present day with Rolls Royce continuing aero engine development and production.
