Gala Mill chimney, Huddersfield Street, Galashiels
Previously known as Abbotsford Mill chimney, this is the last remaining mill chimney in the town. At one time over two dozen weaving mills were situated along the Gala Water, but most have been demolished or converted for multiple occupancy. A local character, Jimmy Rae (also known as Piper Rae), used to walk around the top of a chimney that was to be demolished playing the bagpipes as a farewell gesture to a landmark in the town. He did this without a safety harness and lived to a good age.
