TQ7630 : Hawkhurst: Dunk's Almshouses and School - with cannon

The square central school block is flanked by ranges of almshouses.

A stone tablet on the school block carries this inscription:

GIVEN BY Sr THOMAS DUNK Kt 1723

However, it is clear that all the detailing (and quite likely much of the fabric) has been renewed in later centuries - the buildings simply don't look that old.

The cannon is a curiosity: according to a plaque, in Victorian times it was used by a local resident 'to protect his private post box from passing traffic'. This is Kent, after all - not New Mexico - and a naval 3-pound gun would have been thought rather an extreme measure.
