No 8 had suffered a loss of power on the climb to Aberffrwd and would not have been able to complete its journey up to Devil's Bridge. The remedy was to swap locomotives on their respective trains at Aberffrwd as for most of the downhill journey to Aberystwyth, the locomotive's main function is to provide braking, so lack of power from No 8 would not be a problem. During the shunting manoeuvres to switch the locomotives they stood together for a while at the 'down' end of Aberffrwd station. Usually when trains pass here, the locomotives are at opposite ends of the station.

The main reason for my visiting Aberffrwd on this afternoon was to observe the shuttle train being hauled by the Hunslet tank 'Britomart' as far as Aberffrwd (see SN6479 : 'Britomart' approaching Capel Bangor). Unfortunately, that was not to be as the late running caused the shuttle train to be terminated at Capel Bangor. The consolation was being able to observe and photograph some unusual manoeuvres at Aberffrwd.
