Dumfries House
Dumfries House
Dumfries House was built for William Crichton-Dalrymple, 5th Earl of Dumfries, between 1754 and 1759. Building work came in on time and budget. The house was designed by John Adam and Robert Adam. The house contains a large collection of Chippendale furniture. The house was inherited through marriage by the 2nd Marquess of Bute in 1814, it remained in his family until the beginning of the 21st century when the 7th Marquess intended to sell the house and its contents. The house, estate and its contents were saved for the nation in 2007 by a consortium headed by Prince Charles, Duke of Rothesay (Prince of Wales), which raise 45m.
