Clare Bridge in the snow
Clare Bridge in the snow
The college bridge, the oldest in Cambridge surviving in its original form, was completed in 1640; the architect Thomas Grumbold was paid three shillings (15p) for the design. The gates displaying the college arms were made in 1714, probably by Thomas Warren; Pevsner and his editor Simon Bradley considered that "their craftsmanship and use of cut sheet-iron is supreme among Cambridge ironwork".
