Coal Mining - the lost industry
Coal Mining - the lost industry
The sculpture on the left is a monument to this lost industry. The battlements and embrasures, along with the white-painted tower were part of the headworks of Wellington Pit, closed after a disastrous underground fire in early XX century [1904?]. Off to the right beyond the picture is the "Candlestick Chimney" - also part of Wellington Pit.
