The Deep Water Berth is the area of quayside on the east side of the harbour which forms the right angle opposite the river sluices. The deep water is provided by the scouring of the bed by the outflow from the river sluices which provides a hole allowing vessels to remain afloat at low water. Due to scour and muddy ground the quay wall berth has subsided over the years and a cavity approximately 3 metres long and at least 2 metres deep has been created under the quay surface. Wooden bollards have been fitted to keep traffic off and piling inserted but the horizontal and vertical cracking has grown to the point where it is becoming unsafe. Consequently work has started on refurbishment of the quay.
