When this photo was taken (August 2004), the tree in the middle of this shot was claimed to be the tallest in Scotland, although others have now apparently overtaken it.
It looks as though the Douglas Fir at The Hermitage has now lost its title as Scotland's tallest tree. According to the Spring 2009 issue of 'Tree News', this particular fir has dropped down to number 4 in the rankings at a mere 61.3m. Above it are another Douglas Fir [Dughall Mor] near Inverness at 62.02m, in second place was a grand fir in Diana's Grove at Blair Castle at 62.7m [ failed to get all of this tree in a photo in March 09 and didn't submit it for Geograph], whilst the new champion is yet another Douglas Fir know as the Stronardron Fir at 63.79m. I don't have a location for this tree, so finding and photographing it could be an interesting challenge for 'Geographers'.
