TQ1247 : Wotton church, with north chapel and mausoleum

taken 25 days ago, near to Wotton, Surrey, Great Britain

Wotton church, with north chapel and mausoleum
Wotton church, with north chapel and mausoleum
View from the north-west, on an afternoon in late October. The outer of the two gabled structures is the mausoleum of the Evelyn family. Tower, nave and chancel are built of local Bargate stone - the tower being the oldest surviving portion, reckoned to be early Norman.

Notice the stone on the mound in the foreground - placed lengthwise, like the old wooden grave-boards still to be found in some Surrey and Sussex churchyards (and occasionally elsewhere).

The shadows almost seem to tell the time - ten past four.
