St John's church, Wotton: porch and tower
St John's church, Wotton: porch and tower
Both porch and tower are built of Bargate stone, quarried locally. But while the porch - which is Victorian - is built of squared blocks laid in courses, the masonry of the tower is largely rubble - much patched-up and scarred by many centuries of weathering. The tower is reckoned to be early Norman.

Bargate stone is quarried from the Greensand formation, and it strikes me that in good light a greenish tinge is quite noticeable.
