The entrance to Headstone Tunnel
The entrance to Headstone Tunnel
Headstone Tunnel on the Monsal Trail in the Peak District is nearly one third of a mile long. It is a former mainline railway tunnel. It is definitely not a place to be when the tunnel lights go off at dusk as seen on the notice on the left. What it is like inside the tunnel can be seen at LinkExternal link

The tunnel was built by the Midland Railway. It was opened on 30th May 1863, eventually forming part of a main line link between London and Manchester. See also LinkExternal link

The nearby Monsal Dale station was closed to passengers on 10th August 1959 and finally after the last Ramblers' Special on 3rd April 1961. The remaining stations on the line were closed on 4th March 1967. Express passenger and goods services continued to pass through until 14th July 1968 after which much of the line through this part of the Peak District closed completely. Track lifting began in 1969 and the route through here is now part of the Monsal Trail, popular with walkers and cyclists.
