Little Shelford: Bradmere Pond in November
The nearby information board explains that “Bradmere Pond was once a wide and shallow lake which, during times of flood, may well have been up to a kilometre wide as the name (Old English for “broad lake”) indicates. The water was drained, probably in late medieval times, through the construction of a ditch along the border between the parishes of Newton and Little Shelford. The willow trees around the pond are regularly pollarded to retain light levels for the pond wildlife.” Coots, mallard and moorhens nest here and kingfishers, grey heron and pipistrelle bats are visitors.
