Wind pump and remains of salt works at St Monans
Wind pump and remains of salt works at St Monans
The wind pump was used to pump up salt water into the salt work sheds built in the depressions to the right of the photo. Coal was used to evaporate the brine.

In the 17th century salt was Scotland's third most valuable export (after wool and fish) and the trade only declined later on with competition from sun-evaporated salt from the Bay of Biscay (which was also cleaner and less contaminated with coal particles).
