Ladybower Reservoir
Ladybower Reservoir
By the end of the 19th century, there was a rapidly rising demand for water from the growing industrial cities of the East Midlands and South Yorkshire. The Upper Derwent Valley was chosen as a conveniently close site for water storage and the Howden and Derwent Dams were built between 1902 and 1916.

Further demand led to the building of the Ladybower Reservoir between 1935 and 1945 - opened in 1945. Water is released from Ladybower Reservoir to maintain the level of the River Derwent. This view from the head of the Ladybower shows the water at a very low level as normally the area in the foreground would be filled with water.

In the distance on the left are the twin pipes of the Derwent Valley Aqueduct carrying the water from the Derwent and Howden Reservoirs to Bamford where it is cleaned, filtered and treated before being supplied to Nottingham, Derby and Leicester.
