TQ2259 : Epsom Downs station, Surrey

Epsom Downs station, Surrey
This station was laid out on the grand scale when built with facilities for large numbers of passengers, sidings where horse traffic could be handled, etc., for heavy traffic was expected for the racing at the nearby course. While this traffic did appear, it faded after the opening of the nearby Tattenham Corner branch, which took people much nearer to the course. In 1979 as seen here the vast open spaces were still apparent, but by 2007 this railway has fallen as low as it could get without being closed completely. The last few hundred yards of the line have been sold off and built over. The remainder of the line from Sutton has been singled with no passing places. A service only operates at hourly intervals. The new terminus of the cut-back line is seen here
