1140 First Castle near the Church built by Sir Bertram de Bulmer. 1382 Present Castle built by Ralph Neville. 1450-71 Richard Neville, Earl of Salisbury and Warwick uses as a power-base during the Wars of the Roses. 1471 The Castle is given by Edward IV to his brother Richard, (later Richard III). 1483 Were the Princes in the Tower conveyed here? Anthony Woodville, Earl Rivers in prison here before execution at Pontefract. 1484 Richard III establishes Sheriff Hutton as a residence of his new Council of the North. His son, Edward, Prince of Wales is buried at Sheriff Hutton. 1485 Castle used as a sanctuary by Richard III’s relatives at the time of the Battle of Bosworth. 1489 Thomas Howard, Earl of Surrey lives here along with the nominal Lieutenant, Henry VIII's infant son, Prince Arthur. 1513 Howard returns to Sheriff Hutton to rest after the Battle of Flodden Field. 1522 Poet Laureate, John Skelton, writes his poem 'A Crown of Laurel' at Sheriff Hutton. 1525 Henry Fitzroy, Duke of Richmond becomes titular Lieutenant—General of the North, residing here. 1536 Thomas Howard, the younger, 3rd Duke of Norfolk takes up residence here to quell uprisings against Henry VIII. 1573 Earl of Huntingdon attempts to repair Castle which has fallen into a state of deterioration. 1618 Castle has become a ruin and is assigned by James I to Thomas Lumsden. 1621 The Ingram family start to take control and to dismantle the Castle to build Sheriff Hutton Hall. 1666 Manor and Castle of Sheriff Hutton granted by Charles II to the Ingram family, with whom it remained until 1919. 1919 Mr B G Jagger buys the Castle for £100 from the family of Lord Halifax. 1940 Mr Wilfred Wagstaff (in whose family it remains) buys Castle Farm and Castle. 2017 Castle up for sale.
