St Peter's Square
St Peter's Square

Following the refurbishment of St Peter's Square the latest addition on the eastern side of the square is a new water and garden feature with stone seating around the edges.

The building in the background is Two St Peter's Square which has replaced Century House SJ8497 : "Century House" 11 St Peter's Square, Manchester M2 3DN whose address was 11 St Peter's Square. Century House was built in 1934 for the Friend's Provident Society. LinkExternal link Funded by Deutsche Asset Management, the new building is described as: "Two St. Peter's Square is part of the new vision for the Square. It offers 5,203 sq ft of retail space and 161,065 sq ft of high quality, BREEAM 'Excellent' Grade A office space across 12 floors." LinkExternal link

To the right is the office block, One St Peter's Square SJ8397 : One St Peter's Square, which replaced the former Elisabeth House SJ8397 : Elisabeth House, St Peter's Square, Manchester which once included the excellent Dutch Pancake House.

The tram stop on the left now has two island platforms servicing the increased traffic from the creation of the Second City Crossing.
Metrolink Second City Crossing
The rapid expansion of the Metrolink network since 2009 placed significant extra demand on the existing line through the centre of Manchester due to the additional number of tram movements as all the routes run through a single line in the city centre.

In January 2014, work began on a second Metrolink line (The Second City Crossing, 2CC) through the city centre as part of the Transport Strategy for Manchester City Centre. As well as giving extra capacity, it will also provide more flexibility to serve special events and reduce disruption caused by future maintenance and renewals in the city centre.

The route runs from the existing line at Victoria Station, through Exchange Square, Corporation Street, Cross Street and Princess Street to the existing Deansgate-Castlefield stop via an extended and enlarged stop at St Peterís Square. A new stop was created at Exchange Square and the Victoria Station stop was improved as part of the overall refurbishment of the station. LinkExternal link

The first stage of the route, between Victoria and Exchange Square, was opened in December 2015 whilst the final section, from Exchange Square to St Peterís Square, was opened to passengers on 26 February 2017.
