National Railway Museum - stationary steam engine
In the early days of railways the steeper inclines were operated by stationary engines operating rope or chain haulages. This is one such engine built in 1833 by Hawks, Sons & Co of Gateshead for the Weatherhill incline on the Stanhope and Tyne Railway. The current cylinder is a replacement of about 1838 by Thomas Murray of Chester-Le-Street and is 26" x 60". This replacement cylinder was actually fitted in the 1880s when the originl exploded. The current flywheel is 20' diameter and was cast in 1975 to replace the original that that had been cut for display in an earlier incarnation of the railway museum. The piston rod is guided by the Crowther type of parallel motion (or Z link) that was popular for Durham winding engines. The steel A frame that is painted brown is not original and the engine originally had masonry walls to support the crankshaft.

Although very much altered, this is still an important and impressive engine representing the early days of the railways.
