Bikes for hire, Marlborough Crescent
A cycle hire scheme was launched for Newcastle by the company, Mobike in October 2017. The high-tech orange bikes can be picked up and dropped off anywhere within the designated area around the city centre. High-tech, lightweight bikes fitted with GPS trackers which most importantly are dockless. The orange and silver aluminium machines have non-puncture airless tyres, a GPS tracker, built-in locks and a cashless smartphone app. The bikes are specially designed so that none of the pieces could be used on another bike to deter thieves. Mobikes are designed to last 4 years with minimal maintenance and are urban bikes using the ‘pinnacle of technology’ designers say. All the bikes are fitted with GPS trackers so their locations appear on the map on the app. You can reserve the bike closest to you, go and collect it, unlock it with the app, and ride it. When you have finished the journey, just park up the bike and click lock it shut with the button on the bike.
