The branch to Merthyr Tydfil from the Neath - Aberdare line passed under the Mynydd Aberdar ridge by means of a tunnel measuring 1 mile 737 yds, the second longest in Wales. The line closed to all traffic in 1962.. This is the NE Portal. The three miles from the SW portal have been converted into a cycleway.
