Ironstone workings near Broomhope
Ironstone workings near Broomhope
A series of shallow round pits and slag heaps show where ironstone has been extracted beneath the limestone escarpment of Skelly Braes. The workings extend for several hundred metres and would have extracted iron nodules from near the surface. The earliest workings are believed to be Romano-British in date and could have supplied ore to the Roman military workshops at Corbridge. Since these remains were first recognised in the 19th century there has been more recent quarrying and some of the older workings have been covered by 19th century slag heaps.
