The material for Slapton beach (also Hallsands and Chesil Beach amongst others) was pushed up as sea levels rose at the end of the last glacial period (Flandrian Transgression, up until 5000 years ago) and is thus roughly symmetrical from each end and best referred to as a bar or barrier beach. This means the supply of material for these features is now very limited so when the beach was mined at Hallsands for material to build Devonport Docks it stayed 12 feet below its former level and the village was subsequently destroyedby a storm. A spit is formed as material is pushed along the shore so often has a thin end where it joins the land and a 'free' end that is modified by wave action, often into a recurved end.
