Taken from the only public right of way within this square (land to the north is private and to the south an opencast mine), the foreground shows the steep side and start of the large spoil heap provided partly to store material removed from the mine and partly to provide a sound baffle for the town below from the explosions in the mine.

The Black Mountain can be seen in the distance.
