Buddle circles, Ystrad Einion mine
This late 19th century mine was worked for copper, lead and zinc. Buddles were a common and effective means of recovering fine particles of mineral from slimes and wastes. They were usually powered by a small waterwheel which rotated brushes within the circle. Fed with a constant stream of water, they used gravity to separate the heavier ore, which settled near the centre and could be dug out periodically.
